Sarcopenia is real. As is Osteoporosis. Sarcopenia is defined as an age-related progressive and generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass and function. Osteoporosis refers to the loss of bone density, raising the odds of fracture. During aging a general decline of muscle mass starting in the third or fourth decade with approximately 3–8% per decade, and accelerates after the sixth decade. Later studies showed that the age-related decline in muscle mass is mainly due to reduced fiber type-2 size (Nilwik et al., 2013a). 

Both of Sarcopenia and Osteoporosis are relatively known to general population. What is less known is the loss of type 2 fast-twitch muscle fibers as we get older. This loss is significant as those fibers are in charge of quick muscle contractions. We can think of this as the ability to catch yourself if you stumble. This loss comes from the lack of moving fast, jumping, sprinting, lifting weights with intent. 

Resistance training, specifically power training (think MOVE FAST), is paramount to improving all of the above to create a more resilient and robust body that can pick up kids or grandkids, go hiking, garden, lift 300 pounds on a deadlift (check out the video HERE from one of our clients) (Rodrigues et al, 2022)!
